A Stunning Value from Southern Italy
During a visit to Puglia in June, I was fascinated to learn this region produces the most wine in all of Italy. Considered off the beaten path by many who when it comes to Italian wines tend to focus on the famous regions of Tuscany or Piedmont, this area is often overlooked.
Located in far Southern Italy (the heel of the boot), Puglia is home to wines that are both impressive and affordable. Outside of Italy, not many know about these wines, but they should as they are delicious, inexpensive and easy-drinking – classic Italian table wines.
The topography in Puglia is flat; however the soil has a lot of crushed limestone and bits of fossilized seashells. It is this unique terroir that creates wines of character and elegance. Puglia is not a big tourism draw. This working-class region has an old-fashioned Italian feel to it and while they don’t have any highly coveted wines like Barolo or Amarone, their everyday wines are rather tasty and worthy of your consideration.
Introducing Contrade from Puglia
Contrade is made by the Falvo brothers of Li Veli, in the Salento area of Puglia. Originally from Tuscany, the Falvo family moved to the area and purchased their 128 acre property and vineyards in the late 90’s with the belief that this region has tremendous untapped potential. The Falvo family restored an old property into a fabulous historical estate and winery. They are well financed, and I witnessed first-hand that they spare no expense nor cut any corners in the production of their wines. The Contrade wines are produced in the historic cellars of Masseria Li Veli with grapes from a small group of local farmers and made according to the highest standards of quality. The Falvo family started this project in 2015 to identify and raise awareness of the best indigenous grape varietals in this prolific and ancient region, making wines that express both the traditions and the elegance of Puglia.
We are pleased to offer two Contrade wines here in the Cellar.
Contrade Negroamaro Puglia 2016 and Contrade Malvasia Chardonnay Puglia 2017. Both wines are priced at $8.99. These wines over-deliver at under $10. Don’t miss these stunning values.
